Women's Head Renovations

In order to fully understand the scope of the renovations needed for Women's Head, a brief look at the history of the room is helpful. The head, from before the fraternity was coed, was half the size of Men's Head, with only one shower and toilet. As the number of women in the house grew, it became increasingly apparent that the head was inadequate for the house. By 1985, women made up 50% of the house and the size of the head was doubled the next summer. The expanded head still has the look of being pieced together from two different rooms and in recent years has suffered from poor layout, poor ventilation, and leaky showers. SPUR aims to fix these problems.

Women's Head will be expanded again and reorganized to better utilize the space:

The proposed layout for the new women's head.

  • Expand the room back into space currently occupied by the workroom.
  • Move the door from outside Dungeon to across the hall from the Coke Room to improve space utilization in the room.
  • Move the toilets back into the space claimed from the workroom.
  • Add a third sink and move them to the wall on the other side of the showers. Move the mirrors with the sinks.
  • Add shelves and cubbies across from the showers and in the corner near the new door.
  • Widen the doorway between the shower area and the rest of the room.
  • Remove the step between the shower area and the rest of the room.
  • Replace the showers.
  • Increase the ventilation to decrease humidity problems.
  • Retile the room in a single color.
Since Women's head will incorporate some of the workroom, we will be reconfiguring some of the rooms in Pit Proper to create workroom space.

The proposed room shift in pit proper.

  • The laundry room (the Bob), will be shifted into the remainder of the old workroom.
  • The new workroom will take up the remainder of the old laundry room and the valve room, which is currently used for storage.
  • We will be converting the boiler to gas, so we will be removing the oil tank from the tank room and moving the storage from the valve room to the tank room.
