SPUR Weekly Update!

Updated June 11, 2002

Renovations are underway! Check back every Wednesday for an update on the construction along with progress photos! Previous weeks' photos and updates are included as part of the SPUR photo diary. The full diary will be available on CD at the end of the project.

Check out the new historic artifact section in the diary that highlights some of the historic elements uncovered during the construction. Our very own urban archaeology project.

My apologies for not captioning pictures. If you have trouble identifying what the picture shows, the picture file names are fairly descriptive.

What's happened this past week

Demolition continues! The rooms that will see major renovation have all been stripped of all finish. The kitchen, chapter room, and men's, wommen's, and guest's heads are all bare. Women's head now connects into the rooms behind it, since it will be extended into that space. The floors on all floors have been stripped of parquet and vinyl. Sections of ceilings have been opened up to allow installation of new sprinkler lines.

On Thursday there was a bit of excitement when the demolition people accidentally set off our kitchen haylon system. Apparently there was an electric box in the kitchen near the haylon system that was not fastened to the wall which fell off and caused the discharge of the system.

What's happening this coming week

This upcoming week will see the start of construction! Electrical work started today. The floor will be levelled and prepped for new flooring. Some new wall partitioning may begin.

The construction schedule had to be modified a bit, pending a hearing for an exemption from the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board on June 24. However, the hearing is not expected to delay the project.
